Croatia’s coast gets all the attention, but there is much more to the Balkan region if you’re prepared to go off the beaten path, and your adventurous spirit will be rewarded with warm welcomes and one-of-a-kind experiences. Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, offers a fascinating taste of a the near east, with its Ottoman heritage, highlighted in the old bazaar part of town a key component of this city on the road to recovery from the Bosnian war of the 90s. The war literally tore Mostar apart and a stop here is the best way to see the city and its rebuilt iconic old bridge, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both Sarajevo and Mostar are great bases for exploring the rest of the country with highlights being Jajce, Travnik, Blagaj and for the curious, the contested Pyramid of the Sun.
